Director:
Art Linson
Year:
1980
Primary Cast:
Peter Boyle – Carl Lazlo
Bill Murray – Dr Hunter Thompson
What Rand Thought:
Murray pulls of a decent portrayal of Thompson, not quite on the scale of Depp in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, it’s neither worse nor better just different. I suspect the reality of Thompson lay somewhere between the two performances.
Peter Boyle was likewise very good as Lazlo (Oscar Acosta), and again the real man probably lay between his portrayal and that of Benicio Del Toro’s Dr Gonzo (Acosta) in Fear & Loathing.
What you did get with Boyle, and this is more about the screenplay than the performance, was a taste of Acosta as the civil rights lawyer, where with Del Toro it was more Acosta the mad party animal.
