Arts Council England and BBC English Regions are joining forces to put St George‘s Day, 23 April, back on the calendar with celebrations up and down the country.
Commuters in Bedfordshire will be among the first to experience the festivities when, on arrival at St Pancras station, they are greeted by a 500-strong choir on the concourse singing a new anthem for England composed and conducted by young English composer Sam Dunkley.
The unsuspecting passengers will already have been transported back to the Thirties during their morning commute. In a tribute to Betjeman’s Metroland film, they will be treated to performances celebrating everything from tea-and-crumpets to tennis rackets and cakes as they experience The Full English. Stewart Lee has returned to TV land (barring a few singular appearances in the 10 years since he last graced our idiot lanterns) with his own series, the aforementioned Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle.
Most folk who know of Mr Lee will probably associate him with the Lee & Herring double act, with erstwhile comedy partner Richard Herring – I say ‘double act’, but we’re not talking Morecambe and Wise here, more in line with the post-modern use, Armstrong & Miller, Enfield & Whitehouse, Mitchell & Webb, et al.
