As talked about on QI – Series 6: Film- this is the YouTube compilation of the Sheb Woolly scream favoured by sound FX editors.
Known in the trade as the Wilhelm Scream it originally appeared in the film Distant Drums in 1957. It then became part of the sound FX archive resting in a stock library as a lowly scream.
It was subsequently ‘adopted’ by a sound effects editor called Ben Bert. He and his friends in the business use it compulsively, to which end it has, apparently, appeared – or rather ‘can be heard’ – in more than 140 films, including;
All the Indiana Jones films, the Star Wars movies, two if the Lord of Rings trilogy, Madagascar, Toy Story, Reservoir Dogs, Poltergeist, Planet of the Apes, Batman Returns, and, as Alan Davies quite rightly pointed out on the show, not The Likely Lads.
BTW: Did you see what I did there… with the title of this entry… QI Scream… Geddit…?:D
Oh, never mind. As you were.
Oh, and it was the 45 minute QIXL version of the show, not he regular 30 minute edit.
